In western countries to write in black, pink, red or whatever you want makes no difference. Even if it’s a name, you can choose the color that you want. In China, to write characters in red means courage, loyalty, happiness etc… But the meaning is different when writing names.
In ancient times, only people in the royal family were able to write in red and this color was reserved for the deceased or criminals. Moreover names of the deceased were written, painted, or engraved in red on gravestones and plaques in the village centers.
We can see that red ink and death are deeply linked. So to write a living person’s name in red simply means they will die soon or you want them dead !

It’s very amazing how meaning of little things like that can change in different cultures …
For French peoples, red is the color of the fault, the annotation, the correction … Not the color of (future) death.
I’ll be making the mistake of writing in red … There is no doubt !
Chinese teachers also correct your homeworks in red, but they don’t write your name in red.
thanks !! very helpful post!
